A water timer turns your watering on and off for you, at the same time every day, whether you're home or away. Most screw straight onto an outside tap and run on batteries, so there's no wiring. You'll find every timer and controller we sell here, from simple dial timers to app-controlled smart timers and mains-powered controllers for larger systems, from Hozelock, Claber and Rain Bird.

Which type of timer do you need?

• One area to water: a single outlet tap timer runs one hose, sprinkler or drip kit.
• Two to four areas from one tap: a multi-zone tap timer gives each outlet its own schedule, so the lawn, borders and pots each get the water they need.
• Control from your phone: smart WiFi timers let you change the schedule from anywhere. Claber's myAquaSolar timers do the same over Bluetooth when you're in the garden, and charge from their own solar panel.
• A fixed system with solenoid valves: a mains-powered controller such as the Rain Bird ESP-TM2 or RC2 runs 4 to 12 zones of buried pipe.
• No programming at all: the Hozelock Auto Off 2210 is a mechanical dial that switches the water off after up to 120 minutes, with no batteries.

Features worth looking for

• Rain delay or a rain sensor skips watering after rain. Claber timers work with the 90915 wired rain sensor, and the Bluetooth models with the 90844.
• Several waterings a day suit pots and baskets that dry out fast, such as the Claber Video 6 Plus, which can water up to six times a day.
• A daylight sensor on the Hozelock Sensor Controller Plus waters at dawn or dusk without setting a clock.
• A manual button gives a one-off watering without changing your programme.

Frequently asked questions

Do I leave the tap on?

Yes. Turn the tap on fully and the timer opens and closes the water itself. Bring battery timers indoors before the first frost.

Will a timer work from a water butt?

Some will. The Hozelock Select 2220, Sensor 2212 and Sensor Controller Plus 2214 all run from a water butt.
